Future Machine with the lake, a jetty and the sunset behind it

When we met by the water 2024

This year in Cumbria, we began with a gathering in Backbarrow of 8 people to share our experiences of dusk and dawn, prompted by beautiful booklets created by Wallace Heim. We walked with Future Machine to the River Leven (that flows from the Windermere waters to the sea), we ate together and spoke to the future.

Meanwhile a display was installed in Windermere Library.

On Tuesday 1st October Future Machine appeared outside Windermere Library at 5pm, a few people were there to meet us. We then slowly walked from Windermere Library down Birthwaite Road to Millerground.

When we arrived at the lakeside the dusk was already setting in. People were bbq-ing, walking dogs, tourists were making the most of the last of the light and preparing to watch the sunset. A local group of wild swimmers arrived. Slowly people came over to see what was happening and meet Future Machine.

People shared some wonderful words for the future. Lots of talk about sewage and pollution, selfies, nature and beauty.
